Pedemontana Route – Stage 9 – from Valeriano to Spilimbergo

There are two good reasons to stop in Valeriano: to taste the local wines, the result of human know-how and what the land has to offer, rediscovered a few decades ago, and to visit the Chiesa dei Battuti. You can recognise this church from the outside by the imposing portrayal of St Christopher, one of the many Renaissance frescoes that also cover the interior walls, all by Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, known as “il Pordenone”.

Then descend along the banks of the Tagliamento, immersed in the tranquillity of the countryside, until you reach Spilimbergo, nicknamed the “town of mosaics” because of its well-known mosaic and terrazzo artists and especially because of the internationally renowned Friuli School of Mosaic. Now that you have reached the end of the route, enjoy a stroll through the streets of the old town of Spilimbergo, once a centre of trade, culture and exchange during the Renaissance.
